Last week I was unable to make it to volunteering so today everyone was glad to see me. Usually there are two people that sit at the desk and answer the phones; meanwhile there is me and another girl named Alex that run around and do the errands. When one of us don't make it in, it can be very hectic and busy. Although, when I first arrived and settled in, the hospital was extremely quiet. I thought that it was going to be a day where I didn't have much to do. After a while the phones started ringing off the hook. We were bombarded with things to do. With just two of us, we were getting things done pretty fast. I found it easy to work with Alex and it was a good opportunity to teach her the things she didn't know because she is fairly new.
One major thing that happened today was a code blue. A code blue means that someone is crashing and is in a severe condition. During this, my job is to hold the doors open in case the doctors need easy access to run right through. When the switchboard operator was announcing this over the intercom, I found it very surprising that out of all the 5 or 6 doctors I saw respond to this call, only one of them hurried. Everyone else seemed to be taking their time as if it wasn't an important call. We later found out that the man had to be incubated, which shows that the doctors shouldn't have taken their time getting there.
