Benefit Dinner: Learning Outcome

EVIDENCE OF ACHIEVEMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVE
Which objective?
4. Worked collaboratively with others

This ties into planning things, but I worked collaboratively with Justine. We communicated with each other and were able to set up what we were going to do to raise money. For example, we worked together to make decisions, like having a bakesale or not (which we did have a bakesale and had a great outcome.)

Benefit Dinner Reflection

March 25, 2009

The main goal of this fundraiser was to raise money to help contribute to Jade Perry's benefit dinner. The intensions of this fundraiser was to raise money to get a spot dog to provide assistance to Jade and the effects of the disease, Friedreich's Ataxia. By informing Sturgis and having a bakesale, Justine and I were able to make over 50 dollars. While this doesn't seem like a large sum of money I found it reasonable for about a week of gathering contributions at school. It made me feel good to know that everything we did went to helping out Jade, someone who clearly needs the support. If I were to be in her situation I would be eternally grateful for everything that everyone has done. I think when it comes to raising money to benefit someone, the main goal can always be larger than what you think. But that doesn't mean that what you have accomplished failed, rather than always put out the most you can because when someone is in need there is never a limit.

Raising money for a good cause and seeing how much it has an effect on the people in need made me feel great. After working with this benefit I'm more considerate to charity and fundraisers. Fundraisers are a fun thing to take part in, and after this I do believe that I will be taking part in any fundraisers that I can. It is a nice way to spend my free time and it is in favor for those who are really in  need.

In all, I am glad that I chose to help with this benefit. It was a great way to spend and dedicate my free time that I had. It also boosted how I felt in the end because it clearly meant a lot to Jade and Becky. I'm glad I could help out in such a simple way. I now also know that it doesn't take much to plan such things. This is helpful to know for the future when I take part in more activities that are similar.

Benefit Dinner: Learning Outcome

EVIDENCE OF ACHIEVEMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVE
Which objective?
3. Planned and initiated activites

I accomplished this outcome by working with Justine and also the ladies at my work (Plymouth OB-GYN), including Becky, Jade's mom.
Justine and I informed the whole school of the fundraiser to see if anyone would want to donate to Jade. We also passed out fliers that informed people of the disease that Jade has and what the benefit dinner was for. Along with this we had an empty water jug out with the flier attached to it to collect contributions. Justine and I also planned a bakesale, which worked out extremely well.

Benefit Dinner: Journal 3

March 22, 2009

Last night was the benefit dinner for Jade. It started at 7 and didn't end until sometime around midnight. There were so many people there that I couldn't even count. It really surprised me to see how many people showed up but it was an extremely good thing!

It was a lot of fun to be there. There was food, karaoke, tables set up that sold t-shirts, autographed pictures of athletes, favor baskets, and all different kinds of things that could raise money. There was also an auction. For example, tickets to go to a Red Sox game, sitting up in the green monster, was auctioned off for $450. Everything went great..and Jade was as happy as can be! She made a speech thanking everyone and couldn't hold back from crying because she was so happy. It was good to see that she made such a success and to know that I was apart of it.

I was planning on staying until the entire thing was over, but because I was also with my mom, sister, her friend, and my friend, I had to leave early. I'm not sure of a total amount of money that was raised..but from the looks of how the night was going, thousands of dollars must have been raised!

Benefit Dinner: Journal 2

March 19, 2009

From the days that we had tried to raise money for the fundraiser, we managed to make 50+ dollars. Even though I would have liked to make much more, I figured that in the time that we had it was a reasonable amount to make. It was also good because it was mostly loose change collected from students and staff members. Some of the money also came from a bakesale that Justine and I had planned out and had during break at school (it was a great outcome.)

When I gave Becky, Jade's mom, the money on Friday (the day before the actual benefit dinner) she was so happy that she was in tears. She really appreciated everything that everyone was doing and contributing. It felt good to be able to help someone even if it was in the simplest way.

Benefit Dinner: Journal 1

March 12, 2008

Today I finally made the time to get "on top of things". Justine and I dedicated our lunch to try and raise money for Jade by donations from the staff and students. I was surprised to see how many students donated their loose change to this benefit. By the end of lunch I'm guessing we made roughly around 40 dollars. Even though this doesn't seem like that much money, I was happy with that rough estimate because we had only been collecting for about 25 minutes. It was also all of the spare change that people had. I'm hoping if Justine and I put the jug out to collect money every lunch until next Friday we can raise a decent amount of money. Either Monday or Tuesday next week we will also have a bake sale. I think that a bake sale would make a good profit because students are always looking for sweets!

Justine and I also have intentions to go "canning" Saturday. I was thinking that I would ask the Shaw's supermarket near my house for permission to sit out at their entrances to see if anyone would like to make donations. We will make a poster bored to display what were are supporting. The poster will also show a picture of Jade and the balance dog that she will hopefully be getting.
