Youth Streetreach Reflection

May 17, 2010

While working with all of the people that do the youth streetreach I had a really fun time. I was able to meet so many different people which allowed me to work on my communication and collaborative working skills. It was nice to engage in a global importance because there are so many people who are homeless in the world and to help in any way possible is the best thing that we could do. Like the SAT tutoring I also had to consider the ethical implications of these activities because I was not used to being around so many people who are not as beneficial as we are or are sensitive to the subject of them being homeless. The people that I met, both the ones who I worked with and who went for breakfasts showed me how important it is to work with others collaboratively and be able to understand and get along with other people. If I ever get the chance, or when I ever get the chance, I will definitely do another activity like this one in hopes to expand my horizon on interactions with people, reaching personal goals, helping those in need, and many other aspects.

Youth Streetreach

January 9, 2010

This morning I had to be at the Federated Church at 6 in the morning. When I got there Liz and I started to make the beverages (like lemonade, ice tea, coffee, etc). We then set up what we made on a table in the main room. I found it interesting that I'm getting very used to talking to people I just meet and I am able to work well with people I usually don't work with. This is probably because of the experiences I've had.
As we began to open the doors and let everyone in I was able to feed the homeless breakfast and engage in conversations with people. Serving breakfast to the homeless (like casseroles consisting of eggs, bread, and any other food like peppers or bacon,) meets the learning objective of engaging in global importance because we are caring for people who are homeless and cannot afford to always eat or get a supply of clothing that they may need.
I also had to consider the ethical considerations of my implications because I didn't want to say anything that may offend anyone in any way. I also thought about all of these people and how what we were doing for them probably meant a lot.
A good amount of the homeless people that were there were from this shelter home in Hyannis, where they are taken in and are given help through water they need. For hearing about this shelter I thought about how I wanted to plan and initiate another program or donation day that would help in any way possible.
By undertaking new challenges I've began to learn that there is a lot more to learn about the world and that people can make a difference in the simplest ways. In our case we provided some clothing for the homeless, served them breakfast, and interacted with them (such as playing cards games, board games, etc.)

Tonight Liz and I went to the Federated Church to set up to feed the homeless tomorrow morning. While we were there we organized all of the clothing that was donated to give to the homeless. We sorted them between men's, women's, and children's clothing. In order to do this without chaos we all had to work together and help one another. When we all worked together it was very easy to keep things organized and under control. We also set up tables that the homeless people could eat the breakfast that we will be serving them in the morning. There didn't seem to be too much to set up but by the time we were finished and got out of the church it had already been over 2 hours. It was nice to meet the volunteers who I will be working with tomorrow and also who I'll be working with in the future while doing this program.
