Youth Streetreach

January 9, 2010

This morning I had to be at the Federated Church at 6 in the morning. When I got there Liz and I started to make the beverages (like lemonade, ice tea, coffee, etc). We then set up what we made on a table in the main room. I found it interesting that I'm getting very used to talking to people I just meet and I am able to work well with people I usually don't work with. This is probably because of the experiences I've had.
As we began to open the doors and let everyone in I was able to feed the homeless breakfast and engage in conversations with people. Serving breakfast to the homeless (like casseroles consisting of eggs, bread, and any other food like peppers or bacon,) meets the learning objective of engaging in global importance because we are caring for people who are homeless and cannot afford to always eat or get a supply of clothing that they may need.
I also had to consider the ethical considerations of my implications because I didn't want to say anything that may offend anyone in any way. I also thought about all of these people and how what we were doing for them probably meant a lot.
A good amount of the homeless people that were there were from this shelter home in Hyannis, where they are taken in and are given help through water they need. For hearing about this shelter I thought about how I wanted to plan and initiate another program or donation day that would help in any way possible.
By undertaking new challenges I've began to learn that there is a lot more to learn about the world and that people can make a difference in the simplest ways. In our case we provided some clothing for the homeless, served them breakfast, and interacted with them (such as playing cards games, board games, etc.)
